About The Chinese Room

The Chinese Room has established a reputation as one of the most creative and exciting studios in the UK. We’re proud to be internationally recognised as pioneers of storytelling with a flair for creating atmospheric, rich and imaginative games.

As a Sumo Digital studio, The Chinese Room is built on passion, on finding amazing people and letting them shine. It’s an exciting time to be part of Sumo, winners of the Develop: Star Awards 2019 Best Studio and GI Biz 2020 Best Places to Work; big things are on the horizon and we want you to be part of our continued journey. Join us!

The Chinese Room is made up of a diverse mix of fantastic people, although sometimes, some groups are still under-represented. We are working to remove obstacles that can make it difficult for those groups to progress their careers in the games industry. We welcome applications from under-represented people in the gaming industry, including, but not limited to women, BAME, older people and those from working-class backgrounds.

Day in the Life of a Senior Dialogue Designer:

As a Senior Dialogue Designer at The Chinese Room, you will be crafting prototypes for dialogue implementation and bringing interactive narratives to life. Your expertise will lay in refining and implementing voice systems for features like combat vocalisations, breathing, crowd and walla, interruption and queuing and priority logic. You will tackle audio editing tasks, such as applying effects processing to speech assets and also refining and expanding the dialogue pipeline across all aspects, including cinematics, voice over and walla.

Through all of this, you will be polishing and expanding the character performances and audio storytelling. You will occupy the space between Narrative, Audio, Design, Animation, Production and Code departments to bring alignment to the dialogue in our project.

Please note, this role can be done on a remote or hybrid basis within the UK.

What you need to do this job:

  • Dialogue Design or Sound Design experience within the Games Industry.
  • Two or more shipped titles on consoles or PC.
  • Experience using Unreal Engine, including Blueprints, Sequencer and animation systems.
  • Experience with Wwise or similar audio implementation middleware.
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude, for you will be closely collaborating with nearly all other departments.
  • A true passion for dialogue, speech, and all its intricacies – and especially for how this can lift interactive storytelling to life.

Interview Process:

At The Chinese Room, we want a holistic and engaging interview process that allows us to get to know you, your skills and your potential. For this role, we are aiming for a 2-stage process but may need to venture to a 3rd stage if needed.

1st Stage: 1 hour with our Narrative Director and Principal Narrative Designer. Here, we will talk with you about your experience, our expectations in the role and ask some competency-based questions. There will, of course, be opportunities for you to ask questions!

2nd Stage: 1 hour with our Audio Director and Senior Narrative Designer. This is a chance for us to discuss further technical aspects of the role, how it fits into the studio and find out more about you!
