Job Title: Associate Technical Director – World of Warcraft

Job Description:

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for an experienced engineering leader to serve as Associate Technical Director for the World of Warcraft team. The successful candidate will assist the Engineering Leadership of World of Warcraft to drive direction for new technology used in World of Warcraft and provide leadership over various programming teams.

This role is anticipated to be a hybrid work position, with some work on-site and some work-from-home. The home studio for this role is Irvine, CA.


What you will do…

  • Develop technology plans and oversee programming development for the team
  • Work with production staff and other leads to establish engineering direction and subsequent schedule requirements across multiple disciplines of programming and technology
  • Coordinate with director level peers to steer various World of Warcraft programming teams to meet goals and requirements.
  • Review and approve completed engineering goals in collaboration with the technical director, the production staff and other leads
  • Evaluate and mentor programmers while being a champion for work-life balance
  • Provide critical analysis of technology and development practices with the goal of improving game quality and team efficiency and fostering a positive working environment
  • Interface with the Technical Director, discipline partners, and leads to ensure that technology interests and policies are properly represented and maintained through the course of development, and that future technology is on track and in development for future products
  • Perform research to acquire new knowledge necessary to achieve goals and maintain the technological evolution of current and future products
  • Maintain familiarity with Blizzard Entertainment’s current game designs as well as with emerging technologies across the game industry in multiple genres
  • Build collaborative connections with Design, Art, Production, Audio, QA and other partner teams
  • Promote, participate in, and contribute to our culture of inclusion and diversity.

To succeed, you must have…

  • Experience as a lead software engineer
  • An ability to mentor technical leaders and excellent people skills
  • Comfort working within an established code framework as well as building technology from the ground up
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience shipping multiple games, at least one as a senior engineer or higher on a large team

  • Proven aptitude for technical design

In the U.S., the standard base pay range for this role is $167,500.00 – $309,876.00 Annual. These values reflect the expected base pay range of new hires across all U.S. locations. Ultimately, your specific range and offer will be based on several factors, including relevant experience, performance, and work location. Your Talent Professional can share this role’s range details for your local geography during the hiring process. In addition to a competitive base pay, employees in this role may be eligible for incentive compensation. Incentive compensation is not guaranteed.
